Ethiopia is famous for being the original source of coffee. Coffee known as buna in Ethiopia is one of our gifts to the world and we are very proud to offer you the Ethiopian coffee experience at Addis in Cape.
A nice story…
The discovery of coffee in Ethiopia is a fascinating one. Once upon a time, a young shepherd named Kaldi was tending to his goats in the hills of a region in Ethiopia called Kaffa when he noticed that his goats were acting unusually energetic. This intrigued the young shepherd, who went in search of the cause for this sudden change in temperament. He found that they were feeding on bright red berries that he had never noticed before. Not knowing what to do, he took the Berries to a monastery. The priest felt that the Berries had to be devilish due to the erratic change in behavior of the goats and threw the Berries into the fire. Once burned, the rich aromas of the coffee were released. From there the berries made their way to Arabia and gradually to the rest of the world. Thousands of years and several varieties later, Ethiopian coffee continues to be one of the strongest, most flavorful and sought after gourmet coffees in the world.
… the coffee ceremony
 |
Ethiopians prepare and serve their coffee in a very unique manner that is meant for leisurely consumption with friends and family.
To begin, raw coffee Berries are roasted over a small charcoal stove, set on fresh cut grass and flowers that fill the house with vibrant and welcoming colors. As the coffee roasts, the house and the neighborhood are filled with its magnificent aroma. The scent of the roasted coffee mingles with the scent of frankincense or myrrh which is always burnt during coffee ceremonies on embers of coal in a small clay container. The incense mixed with the smell of fresh cut grass, flowers and coffee, makes for a veritable Ethiopian aromatherapy experience.
